Memorial Day Weekend Activities

Image
On Saturday night we had a cul-de-sac party, including a cookout, fire with smores, and a visit by our local robot engineer brothers...they are the ones with pocket protectors, if you couldn't tell! The robot was awesome and it quickly overcame the human obstacle course, where it ran over kids laying on the street, and a slalom run through the cones. On Sunday we went down to watch the Rolling Thunder, a motorcycle club that gathers every Memorial Day weekend for a ride around near the Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon. There were thousands of bikes, mostly Harleys, and all LOUD! We were on the roundabout near the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the guys and gals got on the throttle as they were rounding the bend. After about fifteen minutes we had to leave to avoid monster headaches. There sure were some good looking bikes. After living here for three years I still hadn't seen all the sights so passed some more parked motorcycles on our way to the Cemetery. It was hot and sunn...

recent trips...

Hi Family, I thought I'd try to make a contribution to the blog by posting some recent travel pictures... March was an incredibly busy month for me... It started with a trip to Munich for an International Jewelry Symposium. My graduate students initiated the trip in many ways and we ended up being a group of 13 (11 students, my colleague and me). It was a fantastic trip and I think the students not only got a lot out of it, but made a wonderful impression on the people there (excellent ambassadors from New York!). me sitting with some of my students at a lovely sunny museum cafe yes, strangely enough, there is surfing in the center of Munich all year round - on a small river that comes through a large park in the city. Some shots of some of the work that we saw their (and innovative methods of display!) Later in the month (over my spring break) I flew to Austin, Texas to meet Tom who was already there. Due to snow delays in New York, we only had 2 days in Austin before we would ...

just rejoined the blog

Hello All, I was checking in the blog and have now migrated. Quick update around here: we've accepted an offer on our condo, from the current president of our condo association, and it seems solid. We close June 11th, so that's looking like our last day in Madison. R's parents are going away for the month of June, so we'll probably stay at their place in the city. Next weekend we go to NY to go apartment-hunting. I have an appointment with a Dr. Faust in Hell's Kitchen who's promised me the perfect apartment, and at a good price (he said something about a first born son but his cell networked dropped the call and I didn't catch the details!). It was fun to see all the sledding pictures -- we got a TON of snow here as did you all; I drove home from Chicago in that blizzard at the end of February, which wasn't fun, but now it's all melted and we're enjoying something like Spring. The lakes are just starting to thaw and yesterday I even sat o...

March Photos for Bil & Kay, Merry Christmas!

We celebrated Dr. Suess' birthday in the library with all sorts of fun activities. Thing 1 is my boss, Anne Calabrese. The Cat in the Hat was a parent, a very dedicated parent who read Dr. Suess books all day! (I made the sweatshirts!) Jason touring Vienna. Tough duty! Terrible picture, I know, but Meg is in black behind Christopher Butters who is wearing the huge bow tie. This was taken during the 6th Grade Chorus performance, Snow Biz. Sorry, no new pictures of Garrett this month. I'll make up for it next month. Enjoy!

Professional Development Day: 22 January 2007

Image
The GLPS had a professional development day, and after my work was completed, we all zipped off to Fitzgerald Park for some sledding. This was back in the thick of the cold snap the midwest received, which makes the sledding noisy and fast, and we were all bundled up pretty well. Just after arriving at the park, I was interviewed by a television crew about some sewage that escaped the treatment plant located in this park, and about which I had no idea. Sadly for the mid-Michigan area, my thoughts were never broadcast, according to Tiffani. And, as is usually the case, Tiff did all the photographing and wouldn't turn over the camera, so she's not well represented in the pictures. Nick the cool snowboarder Sophia on her solo kamikaze run. These blow up tubes are difficult to steer and whiplash fast, especially for newbie 4-year olds; she biffed some big kid at the bottom of the hill and wasn't keen on going solo anymore. Seamus looked huge with all these clothes bundled ...

Who says that Virginia can't have school closings too?

Last weekend the wx forecasters had been calling for a huge storm of up to 12 inches of snow for our area. On Tuesday the storm hit, but the temperatures were so crazy that we received more sleet and freezing rain than snow. The kids were released two hours early that day and didn't have to go back to school all week! While the main streets were fine on Thursday, sidewalks were treacherous and it was taking all the county's efforts to get the areas around the schools clear of the ice. Anyway, one of the neighbors had parked their car in front of our house, which also serves as the neighborhood sledding hill, so everyone was forced to sled down the icy street that second night. As you can see, we had quite a few sledders. And not all of them were kids. The temperatures have stayed below freezing all week, but today, Saturday, the forecast calls for a high of 39. Garrett wants to go bowhunting this afternoon so we'll probably give that a shot...get it?
