Teutonic sandwich

Image
One of the most over the top Germanic sandwiches ever !  We saw this recipe in a Texas newspaper last winter and just had to try it.  This won't happen often - quite a bit of work. Each patty is 2/3 of a pound of ground pork.  There are sliced discs of cooked bratwurst on top of that.  Then a slice of Swiss cheese. There is a "slaw" over that.   The slaw is made by chopping and frying bacon, then frying onions in that, then add sauerkraut to that mix and let it all heat together for a while longer. Sliced dill pickles on top. The spread for the bun is more or less equal parts melted butter and spicy mustard.  Pretzel buns, of course. The jaw does not unhinge this wide.  Had to use a knife and fork.  It was not as strong tasting as I had expected, but of course was so meaty that it is not for the faint of heart.  I'm not sure I'd change anything.   Recipe details furnished on request. I had mine with a great home brewed IPA from one of Chris's friends

Pressed Sandwich

Image
I've been seeing a series of photostories on pressed sandwiches, which rapidly whet both my imagination and my appetite. On a subsequent shopping trip I found the enclosed loaf on the clearance rack and had many of the ingredients already in our refrigerator or freezer, so we set off. You can find more information and descriptions in the photos captions. Clearance bread from Kroger's. The hollowing-out, which was taken a little too far. The first layer had 3 sirloin steaks and 2 sautéed onions. Then sautéed red and yellow bell peppers. Grated mozzarella cheese, 2 separate layers of bacon, spinach, and more bell peppers: It's healthy, it's practically a salad! Capped off by the hollowed out lid it measured about 8 inches high. The pressing process: Assistant sandwich constructor Sophia (note the apron) and (a hidden) Seamus on a large cutting board for 60 minutes. Pressed and cooked. Poor photo, but the finished product.

Pizza Report - Georgio's

Image
I bought two GroupOns last November for the  Charles St. Location of Georgio's Gourmet Pizza , and we finally redeemed them tonight a day before they expired. Wow. We ordered two 16 inch pizzas split between the following gourmet titles: Nacho, Mediterranean, Stuffed Meat, and Stuffed Spinach. We would all rate the crust as good and the flavor distinctive. Cori and I had half pieces of each, and she commented that it may have been the best pizza she's ever had. Sophia thought the stuffed meat was 'delicious' and 'messy.' Nick described it as homey, well-made, and served well, and Seamus said the nacho was good and 'swag.' Highly recommended .

Lincoln Movie

We’ve recently seen the movie, Lincoln, and enjoyed it very much.      Kay has read the Lincoln biography, Team of Rivals , and I have read the first one third of the book, twice.   The movie may have been partly inspired by the book, although the script chose to focus almost exclusively on one month in Lincoln’s life, January 1865.   This is far from an action film, and would probably bore many people. We found the layering of familiar themes with less well known ones to be appealing.   The brooding and focused Lincoln, who occasionally turns to story-telling and his sometimes manic wife, are juxtaposed with the slimy political dealing to secure votes and secret meetings with Confederate envoys. Daniel Day Lewis portrays a Lincoln that is eminently believable and very sympathetic.   Sally Fields does a fine job as Mary Todd Lincoln.   Two old war horses, Tommy Lee Jones and Hal Holbrook turn in very fine performances as members of the House of Representatives, especially Jones, w
