A little Texas update

Hello from South Padre Island,










We've been here for almost three weeks. We have a two bedroom apartment in a two story, ten apartment, building about a block from the ocean. It's not as nice as our find last year, but clean and neat and just fine for us. There's a small pool, which attracts the sun seekers around noon and a happy hour gathering every afternoon.
Kay has been continuing the exercises that the rehab people in GL taught her, and we have been riding bikes almost every day. She's up to a half hour ride now and is really happy to be back on a bike. She has always enjoyed riding here and was really looking forward to it. This makes the whole trip worthwhile. Some days it's challenging due to the wind, but she perseveres.
We have checked out most of our usual haunts, as well as some new ones. Thanks to Harry alerting us to the Texas Monthly article about barbeque joints, we've added two new places that had some fine offerings. We have yet to make it to the #1 rated place, but we may before we head north.
The photos are: Kay at our pool (the purple flowers are vinca), Kay at a small orange grove owned by a grumpy old Buffalo, NY transplant, and me in front of a colossal poinsettia at the orange grove. This guy is only grumpy with me, he likes the ladies. The difference in his demeanor is night and day, it's hilarious. The black containers of oranges are a variety called Mars, and are $5. That size lasts us about a week. They're so fresh and juicy it's worth the
15 mile drive.

All the way down there and you still have jackets on. You wouldn't last long here the way the weather has been the last two or three weeks. 20s during the day and close to zero at night.

so great to get a posting from you two - it looks wonderful down there. i agree with jeff, better to be there than here - it is getting super boring to have day after day of grey and cold - hope that makes you feel even better!

Perhaps the jackets are just part of the training you are going through for your trip to Accra. Loved the pictures!

Tiffani dropped us off at a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the Grand Ledge Masonic Temple, then we had plans to visit the public library and mosey home. The breakfast was good, but very sparsely attended: a mother and son, half a dozen firefighters , and us. (Local political intrigue: the former mayor , and the current mayor , were both present. Bitterness?) We made our way to the library via the new path underneath the bridge, but the kids had to regale me with all the stories of already having performed all these stunts, walked these paths with Bompa and Grandma. Some books and movies chosen, a re-introduction to the library cat statute, a ride on the library porpoise, and a pleasant walk home in the sunshiney, chilly morning.

The Patriarch's 70th Birthday @ Arcadia

Stacy, a Grand Ledge graduate, explaining the labeling machine that was acquired from Budweiser. Cruising through the  Twitter  this winter , I note that  Aradia  -- a semi-local brewpub, and of which mom and dad are founding members -- is having what they term a 'beer dinner' on April 28, which also happens to be dad's 70th birthday. Thinking that it's a natural occasion and destination to celebrate dad, the Turner boys scheme to get him there. When we arrived (albeit, a little late, due to unforeseen Michigan Avenue construction in Battle Creek), we were provided with a brief tour of Arcadia's production facility, and given a menu agenda for the evening. Chef Sean described the evening's meal as turning food inside out, changing our perception of what we typically perceive, encounter, and eat. In Memoriam: J. Morgan Sweeney, Ph.D

Our good friend, Dr. J. Morgan Sweeney, passed away while teaching in London on Wednesday, August 8, 2007. Morgan -- an Irishman by clan, an Englishman by education, and a Gotham resident during his youth (his father was employed at the United Nations ) -- returned to the United States after completing his Ph.D at Oxford , and took a job with the History Department of Michigan State in 1976. Morgan wrote and lectured on modern European history, especially British, was active teaching in MSU's Study Abroad program in London , and was especially valued and loved by former students. Click for the obituary. Not having Morgan as an instructor during my time at MSU, I was introduced to him by our mutual friend, Drew Beiter, a former student. With Drew sequestered off working in California or Wyoming or the greater Buffalo area, and me living here in Williamston or Grand Ledge, I was able to more fully develop my own relationship with Morgan.
