Lady Comets fall in opener

Dec. 4, 2011

GRAND LEDGE - Grand Ledge varsity head coach David Jones says that his goal and that of his team is to play at the level that visiting Portland played in last Monday's season opener. Portland jumped out to a quick 14-3 first period lead and never looked back as they surged past the Lady Comets 47-27.

"We knew going into the game that Portland would have an excellent team and they did," said Jones. "They're probably one of the top three teams that we'll face all season so we learned a lot from them."

That they did as Portland's Sarah Trierweiler knocked down 17 points of her own in the win.

After falling behind by 11 at the end of the first period the Raiders outscored the Comets 10-8 in the second period to hold a 24-11 half-time lead.

That lead expanded to 36-21 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

"We struggled early in the game but when the girls settled down they did a pretty good job," added Jones. "We're a young team with just three seniors and three juniors. We've got five sophomores and two freshmen and they're all working hard to improve."

Portland outscored Grand Ledge 11-6 in the final period of play to complete the run and the 20 point win.

Cori Crocker led the Comets with 6 points while Lindsay Orwat added 5. Beth Boman scored 4, Krysta Kramer 3, Hannah Orwat 3, Lauren Bachert 2, Erin Konen 2 and Ashley Priest 2.

The Comets hit six of 10 free throws. Portland dropped in eight of 18.

"There's no doubt in my mind that we'll improve as we go. We want to compete in the league and I think we'll be able to do that," added Jones. "Our goals are very obtainable."
