City Market Luling, Texas 3/2/09 The City Market in Luling is one of the premier barbecue houses in all of Texas. It consistently rates in the top ten in Texas year after year, by many different rating groups and/or individuals. We have eaten here once before, about five years ago. Luling is fifty miles east of San Antonio, situated in long low undulating hills. The movie, Second Hand Lions, was filmed not too far away. A double railroad track runs the length of the business district in a grassy parkway. The town of about 5000 hosts a watermelon festival every summer. The City Market is a modest place in an old building in downtown Luling. The pits are in the screened-in back room. It’s necessary to walk the length of the restaurant and enter the cramped dark smoky pit area where you order from one of three pit men. Friday night Jeff organized a tail gate party in the parking lot of Neff School and grilled hot dogs and brats with other people contributing to the supper. It all was delicious. Unfortunately, Emilee had to work so Abbey's friend wore her shirt. The front of the shirt says GL FOOTBALL and the back: TURNER, next line: Part of the, next: Family and Josh's number 66. Top pic: Karen, 2 friends of Alexa's, Jeff, Alexa, Grandpa and Grandma, Aunt Jenny and 2 friends. Bottom pic: Karen, Jeff, Abbey, Alexa, Bil, Abbey's friend, Madison, Kay and Jenny. In Memoriam: J. Morgan Sweeney, Ph.D

Our good friend, Dr. J. Morgan Sweeney, passed away while teaching in London on Wednesday, August 8, 2007. Morgan -- an Irishman by clan, an Englishman by education, and a Gotham resident during his youth (his father was employed at the United Nations ) -- returned to the United States after completing his Ph.D at Oxford , and took a job with the History Department of Michigan State in 1976. Morgan wrote and lectured on modern European history, especially British, was active teaching in MSU's Study Abroad program in London , and was especially valued and loved by former students. Click for the obituary. Not having Morgan as an instructor during my time at MSU, I was introduced to him by our mutual friend, Drew Beiter, a former student. With Drew sequestered off working in California or Wyoming or the greater Buffalo area, and me living here in Williamston or Grand Ledge, I was able to more fully develop my own relationship with Morgan.
